Jake Jacoby, in his first matches as head coach of the Ole Miss Rebels men’s tennis team, led the squad to two victories on Friday at the William F. Galtney Indoor Tennis Center. The Rebels opened their spring season with a 6-1 win over Alabama Birmingham (UAB) and followed up with a 7-0 sweep against North Alabama.
In the first match against UAB, Ole Miss secured the doubles point early. The No.11-ranked duo of Isac Strömberg and Kai Milburn won their match 6-3 against Ondrej Valek and Juan Pablo Valdez. Matthieu Chambonniere and Benjamin Martin also contributed with a 6-2 victory, marking Chambonniere’s 20th career doubles win.
Singles play saw Noah Schlagenhauf start strong for Ole Miss, winning his match in straight sets. Freshman Vlado Jankanj earned a decisive win in his debut at home, defeating Conor Flynn 6-2, 6-2. Strömberg clinched the overall match for the Rebels by overcoming Hoan Mouret in three sets.
The second match of the day had Ole Miss facing North Alabama. Strömberg and Milburn again led in doubles with a 6-1 victory over North Alabama’s ranked pair Alberto Altur and Izan Orgiles. Stefano D’Agostino and Pietro Pampanin secured another doubles point for Ole Miss with a close 7-5 win.
In singles competition, Benjamin Martin notched his second win of the day with a quick result on court five. Pampanin claimed his first career spring victory by defeating Altur on court three. Other singles wins came from Chambonniere, Jankanj, D’Agostino, and Strömberg.
Ole Miss will continue its season at home with a doubleheader against Furman scheduled for January 17.
