Lafayette County - Margie Avants

71

We are proud to honor Margie Avants as Lafayette County’s June Employee of the Month. Margie has served as a shift supervisor and corrections officer for the Lafayette County Sheriff’s Department for 13 years.

Margie’s job is to “make sure everything’s done right,” said Johnny McDonald, Jail Administrator. In addition to booking, fingerprinting, and making rounds, she helps inmates by connecting them with their families and assessing their needs. Her proactive mentality helps to maintain control and ensure a safe, clean environment.

“Margie’s a hard worker,” said McDonald. “She great at leading her shifts and making sure everyone is on task.”

Margie also treats inmates with great care and respect. On many occasions, she has given inmates free haircuts and administered shots or medications when nurses are unavailable.

“Inmates deserve to be taken care of, and they are our responsibility,” said Margie.

After her years of service at the Sheriff’s Department, Margie is retiring in June. She plans to travel with her husband and spend time with her great-granddaughter every week. She will miss spending every day with her coworkers because they have become like family.

“This is the best job I’ve ever had,” Margie said. “I love it here, I may even work part-time again after a few months off!”

We are incredibly thankful for Margie’s contributions to the Sheriff’s Department, and we wish her a happy retirement!
